February 25th was fifth annual JJC Oratorical Contest. Our club initiated this Optimist International event to address juvenile delinquent children housed at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center. This event was undertaken in conjunction with the L’Anse Creuse Public School staff and County Staff. Over 35 children competed this year based on their poise, content of speech, delivery, presentation and overall effectiveness by a team of three judges.
This year the topic was selected by school staff and club members is, “Learning from my past in preparing for my future…”.
We were honored to have Linda May (Macomb Daily) join our judging team this year. Also in
attendance were Krista Browning (C & G News) and Paula Rose (L’Anse Creuse Community Relations).
The program introductions and awards were presented by John Klatt, Elaine Lyon and Jeff Sprys.
About 30 spectators were in attendance including club members Cindie Szarek, Dan Kardasz, Craig Babcock, Barry Burnham and Assistant Governor, Dan Moss and Donna Onifer (one day early).
At the end, judges had a difficult time deciding on a winner of the five finalists. Awards were presented to first, second and third place along with two honorable mention. A visit to the JJC library followed the event. (our club has donated to this project in the past). Special thanks to teachers Karen Bradley and Karen Lafata and JJC staff.
